摘要

霍桑在创作巨著《红字》时的“意义含糊”和“感情矛盾”的写作风格导致了关于其主题多元化的评论和分析。从人性的角度审视这部作品，人类文明与人性应该是协调一致的，人类文明不应压抑也无法压抑人性。本文对这部作品中的主题和人物进行了探悉，指出霍桑巧妙地运用了象征手法，揭示了清教压抑下的人性扭曲与异化，从而表达一种冲破枷锁，建立新道德的美好希望。

ABSTRACT


Hawthorn’s ambiguity and ambiguity in writing his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter leads to pluralistic comments and analysis on its theme. Examing this novel from the standpoint of human nature, one could see that the human civilization should correspond with the human nature and that the human civilization shouldn’t and couldn’t depress the human nature. This essay makes a brief exploration of the theme and the characters of this novel, and shows that Hawthorne makes tactful use of symbolism and exposes tortuosity and heterization of the constrained human nature by Puritanism to express his beautiful hope breaking through shackles and establishing new morals.
